Overview / Usage

iDrive VR, a motorized wheelchair driving simulator experience using any drive control; chin drive, head array, joystick, or sip-and-puff, introducing experiential training as an assessment tool for therapeutic uses was just released. The data and analytics output from the simulation will help clinicians assess more patients. Users “feel” the motion in a physically accurate chair replica with environmental obstacles they must overcome. This was built to enable future extension for more leisure activities or smart home functionality with a priority on accessible and affordable system hardware. Users will now have unprecedented access to a tool that can increase quality of life increasing motivation to live, work, and progress. Underminer worked with Stealth Products a subsidiary of Quantum, the second largest wheelchair manufacturer in the world.

Methodology / Approach

The performance of using actual wheelchair controls: joystick, sip and puff, chin, or head array will make this widely available to assess many kinds of limited mobility patients. They can now functionally train in a safe environment with unlimited time to practice before they take a final assessment. The current evaluation is time boxed for 6-8 weeks and if a user is not approved for a chair, they can never get one. If they choose to go around the ruling and pay out of pocket, then they are dropped from their insurance. This will give clinicians the ability to test more patients and get more people back to a better quality of life. The data and analytic output is an objective status and can help assess issues that may not be perceptible to the clinician.
